Twitter: data for account security used for advertising
On Twitter, the phone numbers and email addresses that users provide for two-factor authentication that secures access to their account were used for advertising purposes. The social network has just admitted it by apologizing. When advertisers want to serve targeted ads via Twitter, they filter the audience using their marketing lists. But the problem is that these lists have been correlated with the data provided for two-factor authentication.
"It was a mistake and we apologize. We can not say for sure how many people were affected, but in an effort of transparency, we wanted to make everyone aware. No personal data has ever been communicated externally to our partners or to third parties, "says Twitter. According to the release, the problem was detected on September 17 and has since been corrected. Last year, Facebook was pinned for using phone numbers and email addresses that users had provided to secure their accounts for targeted advertising. (Eureka Press)
